Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

We install and service Aprilaire vent sanitizing systems in San Antonio. Installed replacement for an Aprilaire UV or sanitizing unit typically runs $385 to $720 depending on the model and whether we’re swapping the lamp, the ballast, or the entire housing. Most jobs get finished in one visit, and we carry the common Aprilaire parts on our trucks so you aren’t waiting on a shipped component.

Most San Antonio homeowners find out their Aprilaire vent sanitizing has failed the same way: a small indicator light goes dark on the control panel, or the system simply stops clicking on when the blower runs. Sometimes it’s the UV lamp at the end of its rated life. Sometimes it’s the power supply or the board. Either way, the fix typically takes under an hour once we’re in front of the unit. Tell me what you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you whether it’s worth fixing.

Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To

Aprilaire’s vent sanitizing and UV purification lines share a lot of DNA across model years, but there are real compatibility gotchas that matter when you’re ordering parts in San Antonio. The current residential lineup centers on the Aprilaire 5000 electronic air cleaner and the UV germicidal systems sold under the Aprilaire 2140 and 3140 designations, but plenty of older homes around Alamo Heights and Castle Hills still run the legacy 2200 and 2400 series media cabinets with UV add-on kits. If your unit has a rectangular UV housing mounted in the supply plenum, it’s a 2140 or an earlier equivalent. If the sanitizer sits inside the media cabinet itself, you’re dealing with a different bracket and lamp length, and getting that wrong means the lamp physically won’t seat.

Here’s the practical version: before you order or swap anything, read the label on the power supply or the lamp housing. Aprilaire stamps a model number on the ballast plate, and the lamp length matters more than the model year. UV lamps for these systems run 12 to 18 inches, and the wattage has to match the ballast. We stock OEM Aprilaire lamps and a select aftermarket line we’ve tested in our own installs across San Antonio. OEM is the safe bet if your system is under any kind of warranty. Quality aftermarket lamps from Photon and Steril-Aire run about 30 percent less and hold up fine in our experience, but we’ll tell you honestly which one makes sense for your specific unit. We’re an independent service provider, not an Aprilaire factory shop, so our recommendation is based on what lasts in South Texas homes, not what a brand rep wants moved this quarter.

Signs Your Aprilaire Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

  • No indicator light or a blinking fault light. The Aprilaire power supply has a status LED that should stay solid when the lamp is lit. A dark or blinking LED usually means the lamp has reached end of life or the ballast has stopped driving it. We see this most often on the 2140 series after about 9,000 hours of run time.
  • A faint ozone smell near the supply vents. When a UV lamp degrades, it can drift off its germicidal wavelength and start producing more ozone than it should. South Texas humidity makes this more noticeable – the ozone bonds with moisture in the air and the smell carries further. If you notice it, the lamp is telling you it’s done.
  • The system runs but the lamp stays cool. A healthy UV lamp puts off noticeable heat inside the housing. After running the blower for 20 minutes, the housing should feel warm to the touch. If it’s stone cold, the lamp isn’t firing, whether that’s the bulb or the power supply.
  • Allergy symptoms tick up during peak AC season. Not the most scientific diagnostic, but it translates in San Antonio homes that run AC ten months out of the year. If your Aprilaire sanitizing was doing real work and you suddenly notice dust or allergen symptoms returning, the UV output may have dropped below useful levels. We’ve pulled lamps from Stone Oak houses that looked fine but had degraded output by 60 percent or more.
  • The UV housing shows cracks or yellowing. The plastic and gasket materials around the lamp housing get brittle after years of heat cycling in a San Antonio attic, where summer temps sit above 130 degrees at the roof deck. A cracked housing lets duct air bypass the sanitizer and can pull attic dust into your airstream.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Antonio homes, here’s what you can expect to pay for Aprilaire vent sanitizing replacement, installed:

Job Typical Range What’s Included
UV lamp replacement only $385 – $510 New OEM or quality aftermarket lamp, housing gasket check, output verification
Lamp + ballast/power supply $520 – $720 Both components, wiring inspection, full system test
Entire sanitizing unit swap $640 – $890 New unit, plenum fitment, sealing, verification run

The range depends on which Aprilaire model you have and whether we need to modify the plenum opening. Older 2200 series cabinets sometimes require a transition plate to fit the newer sanitizer housings, and that adds material cost. Every quote is one flat price per system, written down before any work starts. You’ll know the exact number before the first tool comes out, and the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new part fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Let’s be direct: swapping a UV lamp is not high-tension dangerous like a garage spring or an electrical panel, but it’s also not a lightbulb change. The lamp itself contains mercury, and breaking one inside a plenum means a cleanup you don’t want to do. The wiring runs off line voltage at the ballast, so you’re working near exposed terminals in a tight space. If you’re comfortable shutting down the system, verifying power is off, and handling the lamp carefully, a lamp-only swap on a 2140 series is doable in about 30 minutes. Most homeowners decide it’s not worth the hassle, and we don’t blame them.

The honest split is this: if the lamp is simply at end of life and you can confirm that visually, a careful DIY replacement is a legitimate option. If the ballast is involved or the housing is compromised, that’s our job. We’ll have a background-checked, photo-badged technician at your door, and you’ll know his name and face before he arrives.
